Knez Mihailova Street or Prince Michael Street, is the main pedestrian and shopping zone in Belgrade. Named after Mihailo Obrenovic III, Prince of Serbia, it features a number of buildings and mansions built during the second part of the 19th century. The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts is a national academy and the most prominent academic institution in Serbia, founded in 1841 as Society of Serbian Letters Frontal scene of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) on pedestrianised Kneza Mihailova. Secessionist stonework, curved balconies and stained-glass arches dominate the façade while shoppers, tourists and a cluster of helium balloons enliven the cultural heart of Belgrade’s main promenade.
